30 Writing Prompts

Need some writing inspiration? Here are a few more writing prompts you can use to get started on your next story! This time, I’m trying to leave them a little more vague then other ones I have made in the past to give you more creative freedom. I hope these give you some writing inspiration.

1. A man is in an alleyway at night waiting for someone. He has a briefcase and a lighter.

2. A young woman receives anonymous letters in the mail.

3. A family moves into an old mansion and finds a box of cassette tapes left in the attic.

4. A grumpy janitor gets the night shift and hears a strange noise in the darkness.

5. A cat tries to alert her owners to the strange things she sees and hears.

6. A man walks into a building feeling happier than ever. He has a gun.

7. A woman who is new to an area asks for directions. The person she asks seems surprised for some reason.

8. A painter goes around town to paint people and buildings. Passersby look at her like she’s insane.

9. A socially anxious man goes on a bus. People won’t stop staring at him.

10. An anxious woman goes to a hotel. She has a birthday present and a knife in her bag.

11. A boy plays fetch with his dog, and throws the ball into the woods. His dog doesn’t come back.

12. Some pigeons are having trouble navigating the skies. They feel like something is wrong.

13. A dog digs up something unexpected in his owner’s field.

14. A gardener finds a strange plant in his garden.

15. A child gets lost in a large blueberry patch. He is not alone.

16. A girl finds a box at a bus stop and wonders what’s inside it.

17. A blind woman senses someone is following her.

18. A girl finds an old book at a library. Inside the book is a note and key.

19. A raven finds a new shiny object for his collection. This causes problems for the original owner.

20. A fisherman is at sea and hasn’t had any success in making a catch. Something in the water is watching him.

21. A spider catches something strange in its web.

22. An inventor finds instructions on how to build a strange contraption.

23. A college student gets a new roommate. The roommate works for a mob boss.

24. A musician finds old sheet music and tries to play the song. Something crazy happens when she does.

25. A man writes love letters to his beloved. He sends them to the wrong address.

26. A woman gets a new metal detector and finds something interesting.

27. A student finds out that someone left a letter in their locker. It’s written in a different language.

28. A man finds a puppy at his doorstep along with a note reading, “Don’t water it.”

29. A person loses his pets, but later finds them on a wanted poster.

30. A woman wins the lottery. The first thing she buys is a sword.
