10 Cozy Fantasy Writing Prompts

Want some inspiration to write a cozy fantasy story? Here are 10 cozy fantasy writing prompts to help get you started! Feel free to share your story in the comments or share your own writing prompt ideas if you like.

  1. Transformation Remorse

A mythical being was once overjoyed to give up her old life to become a human. But after a few months have gone by, she wonders if she made the right choice. Being human isn’t always easy, and there are still a lot of cultural differences between her and the normal humans. However, she finds solace in a few other former mythical beings who have the same dilemma as her, so they decide to hang out at a cafe every now and then. Do some of them regret giving up their former magical states in exchange for a “normal” human life? Are some willing to give up the new human life that they had once struggled so hard to get? Do they decide to try to go back to being mythical beings again? If so, what do they do to revert back into a mythical being?

  1. The School for Retired Heroes

With the magical realm finally saved, the Chosen Ones can finally go home and relax. However, that is easier said than done. For some, it was easier to fight monsters and enemy forces rather than their own inner turmoil. To help assimilate them back into society, the Chosen Ones are sent to a school for retired heroes, where they can learn or relearn skills needed to live a “normal” life and speak to counselors about their problems over a cup of tea.

Do they make friends with other former Chosen Ones? What kind of friendships or rivalries are formed in this school? Do the Chosen Ones ever manage to address the inner conflict they may try to avoid?

  1. Unopened Letters

In a world where adventurers and Chosen Ones are constantly running around fighting the forces of darkness and having the time of their lives, it can be hard for their loved ones back home to get them to respond to their letters. They usually end up getting their letters sent back, unread and unopened. So, now the only thing the senders can do is hang out at their local coffee shop or tavern and chat.

How do the mail-senders feel about not getting a response from their friends or family? Are the adventurers and Chosen Ones not responding because they are too busy, because they never got the letters, or is it because of something else?

  1. A Mythical Beast’s Dilemma

A mythical beast is sick and tired of people being afraid of him, and tries to find a way to be more likable by asking a famous hero for advice. However, the hero isn’t quite sure if he can help him, or even if he wants to.

Does the hero help him? Do they end up becoming friends? Does the mystical beast accomplish his goal?

  1. Reunion Retreat

A magical retreat run by fairies (or whatever fantasy creature you like) is created to help old friends reunite after drifting apart. How do the friends feel after finally getting to see each other again? What conversations do they have? What fun activities do they do? What conflict, both internal and external, do they have to face together?

Do they have to tame wild unicorns? Face troublesome nymphs who want to play pranks? Or do they have to help the fae fix some magical mishaps by using “the power of friendship?”

  1. Magical Cat Coffee Shop

Lots of people love their local coffee shop not only because of its delicious coffee and desserts, but because of their adorable, magical cats! It is said that if one of the magical cats decide to sit on your lap, then you will be blessed. So when a few patrons do end up getting cats on their lap, they are ecstatic, but the blessings are not what any of them expect.

What are the blessings? What happens to the characters who have been blessed by the cats? Do others grow jealous of them? Are friendships and rivalries formed?

  1. The Unfinished Story

The child of two noble heroes is passed down a book. Inside it are the adventures of his parents, but there are still blank pages he needs to fill with his own adventures. Trouble is, he doesn’t want to fight dragons or overthrow evil dictators. He wants to do a less dangerous profession he’s more interested in. So what does he write in the book?

What is this character’s desired profession? What kind of not-so-exciting adventures does he go on instead of the one’s his parents did?

  1. The Cute Creature Curse

As punishment for breaking the laws of the fae, a fairy is turned into a cute animal. As the fairy tries to learn to navigate life as an animal, and see if she can break the curse, she ends up being adopted by an oblivious princess and lives with her in her magical castle.

What does the pixie do next? Does she end up becoming friends with the princess? Does she find a way to communicate with the princess so that she can get her to help break the curse? Or does she decide that being pampered by a princess makes living as an animal more bearable?

  1. The Cure

A distraught young woman is in search of a cure for a broken heart, so she goes to a herbalist for help. The herbalist says she can help her. However, the herbalist also says that to get what she seeks, she must help tend her garden, as well as help tend the garden of a few other people in her town.

Does the woman find the cure she needs? Does she befriend the other people she helps? What lessons does she learn?

  1.  The Museum of Magical Artifacts

A curator in a small museum must maintain and preserve the history of magical artifacts that have lasted for hundreds and thousands of years. But one day, several people come to the museum and start correcting him on the lore behind the artifacts he is curating. After further discussion, the curator discovers that these people are the heroes who wielded those same artifacts years ago. But how is that possible? They should be dead.

What does the curator do next? Does he befriend these heroes of old?
