20 Unique Professions for Your Characters
Do you want to give your character a more unique profession but can’t think of one? Here’s a list of 20 unique jobs your character can have!
1. Cat Trainer (Or Cat Behavior Consultant if you want it to sound more professional)
If your character is a cat lover, this may be the perfect job for them!
2. Book Conservator
Perhaps your character enjoys repairing books for a living.
3. Hand Model
Maybe your character likes to model jewelry and other fashion items for the magazines. Or maybe you could get creative and have your character be a hand model for companies who sell battle axes and swords.
4. Professional Eulogy Writer
Maybe your character is tasked with writing eulogies for people who don’t know how to express their thoughts on the deceased just right. Perhaps your character has to do some research on this person because most of the deceased’s loved ones don’t know anything about him.
5. Golf Ball Diver
If there’s anyone that can save golf balls that have sunk into the lakes and ponds on the golf course, it’s a golf ball diver (BBC).
6. Professional Chocolate Taster
Someone has to make sure the chocolate is perfect for consumption.
7. Food Taster
Perhaps your character works for the royal family and must make sure no one is poisoned.
8. Food Stylist
Maybe your character likes to make the food look pretty for the cameras (BBC).
9. Globemaker
10. Soapmaker
11. Candlemaker
12. Cartographer
13. Taxidermist
Maybe your character likes animals so much that they stuff them and mount them on their mantles and walls.
14. Pet Food Taster
Turns out people have to test pet food for animals (BBC).
15. Mermaid
I’m not talking about the ones in myths and folklore (at least not yet). I’m talking about people who act as mermaids at parties and aquariums (BBC). Your character could be paid pretty well for a job like that.
16. Costume Attendant
Perhaps your character likes to take care of costumes for performers in plays and movies.
17. Glass Blower
18. Brickmason
19. Arborist
This is a person who maintains trees, is knowledgeable on tree biology, and knows how to properly plant, prune, and remove trees (‘What Does an Arborist Do?’ CareerExplorer). They also know how to diagnose and treat tree pests and diseases (CareerExplorer). If your character is a plant lover, this might be the job for them.
20. Debt Collector
This may not be the most joyful job for your character, but it could be an interesting thing to experiment with. Maybe your character doesn’t just collect debts in the form of money. Maybe they collect other forms of payment like time. Maybe your character hates the job, but needs the pay. Or maybe he loves the job, but isn’t paid enough. Don’t be afraid to get creative.
