Book Review: The Bakery Dragon

The Bakery Dragon is a children’s fantasy book written and illustrated by Devin Elle Kurtz. It was published in 2024 by Alfred A. Knopf (Penguin Random House is the parent company). The story is about a little dragon named Ember who, like all dragons, loves gold more than anything. Problem is, he doesn’t have a hoard of gold like the other dragons (who are much bigger and intimidating than him). While the bigger dragons can spew out fire and scare people into giving them gold, Ember can only spew out a small flame and cannot scare villagers into giving him anything. In his search for gold, he comes across a kind baker who teaches him how to bake tasty “gold,” and he learns that this tasty gold is even better when it is shared. I enjoyed the story, as well as the moral about sharing with others is much better than stealing and hoarding. The writing is good, but since this is a children’s book, I feel the biggest strength is the illustrations. The illustrations are beautiful, and Devin E...

The Story Wasn't Supposed to End Like This

The story wasn’t supposed to end like this.

It was supposed to have an ending of perfect bliss

With the whole kingdom joyful that the dragon was dead

And with the princess and knight being happily wed.

It was supposed to end with the dragon slain,

With the knight earning the title of Dragon’s Bane

With him riding his noble steed in a gallant parade

After valiantly accomplishing his noble crusade.

It was supposed to end with the princess set free

From the dragon that placed her in captivity

In his dark, smokey, and gloomy cave

Which the princess once dreaded would be her grave.

It was supposed to end with the brave knight

Surviving his brutal but courageous fight

With the dragon that kidnaped his beloved

By piercing the dragon’s heart and spilling its blood.

That was how the story was supposed to end.

But on the road to write the story, I came to bend.

One idea led to another, and after writing the last chapter

I thought my story was better without the happily ever after.

Now the knight is dead, but the princess is alive.

She is grieved, but knows her kingdom must thrive.

She helps her people rebuild and rise from the ashes

The dragon left behind before the knight gave him slashes.

It is strange how stories tend to unfold

Until a completely new story is told.

Sometimes I don’t know what story I will write

Until I put ink to paper in the middle of the night.

The story wasn’t supposed to end like this.

It was supposed to have an ending of perfect bliss.

Though the ending I ended up with is bittersweet,

In the end it makes my story feel more complete.
