One day, I was browsing the bookshelves of my local library looking for something interesting to read. There’s one particular shelf in an adult section of the library that I like to browse all the time, and it’s one that has books of myth, folklore, and fairytales . I eventually found a book that I had never heard of or read before; Two Old Women . Two Old Women is a book written by Velma Wallis . It is an Alaskan legend of the Gwich’in people that Wallis’s mother told her after they had finished collecting firewood (p. xi). According to Wallis, her mother had told her this story because of an earlier conversation they had while collecting firewood (p. X.) Five Fantasy Writing Prompts to Try

1. A teenager drowns in a lake only to wake up in a completely new world. She meets an old woman who tells her that the only way for her to return home is to kill the monster lurking in the Forbidden Forest. With the wise woman’s guidance, the girl trains for years to prepare for the task ahead. When she is ready, she goes to the forest to face the monster. But there is one teeny tiny problem: the monster is already dead.


2. A youth has been told by the king that he is the Chosen One of prophecy destined to save their kingdom from ruin. But after reading the scrolls hidden in a secret library, he finds out that the prophecy foretells his family’s death…but only if he succeeds in saving the kingdom. Should he save the kingdom, or should he save his family? The answer is obvious.


3. A fairy steals a woman’s pearl necklace, thinking she won’t miss it if it’s gone. However, the woman finds her and reveals that she is not a simple, silly human. She is actually a mermaid princess. Those who cross a mermaid are doomed to live a life of misfortune until the day of their death. The fairy begs for mercy, and the mermaid agrees on one condition: she must trade in her wings for the mermaid’s tail.


4. A group of heroic knights and fairies who have been at odds with one another for centuries must band together against a common foe after an evil witch sends their loved ones to a dangerous dimension. The witch demands that they give her a forbidden relic in exchange for their loved ones’ safe return home. The heroes begrudgingly agree, but tensions are high as they make the long, tiresome journey to retrieve the relic. The tension is so high in fact, that someone might accidentally kill their best ex-friend.


5. A teenager who yearns to fly and is tired of being the black sheep of her family decides to run away to the Fairy Forest. It is said that in the Fairy Forest, every outcast finds a home, and every mistreated child can get the chance to earn fairy-wings. However, she finds that the culture of the fairies there is extremely different to the culture of her former home, and that to earn her wings, she must go through multiple trials that test her strength, endurance, and patience.
